I tend to only comment on posts when I feel I can either add to the substance of the post, or join in the "conversation" in the comments with relevence. That being said, I'm not opposed to leaving a comment that is in the realm of "great post" if the post was truly great but didn't really leave any room for comment.

Sometimes people can write content that's almost too perfect. No room for addition or backlash or anything really, then all you can do is either read and ignore or leave a comment that simply says "great post" because it was informative and well written.

By the way,

Great post!

OK, so you got me to comment. I've been reading and enjoying your blog for a few months now, but this is my first comment. Keep up the good work.

I comment when I have something interesting to say...and when I know my writing is relevant to the topic at hand.

I never comment just to get a link in; it just doesn't work in the long term.

Data points, Barbara
