I read it somewhere that thematically related site, according to Google can be quite broad. I guess this is true.

Getting links from a gardening site to a web designer site can be relevant too, if those are done in a page that talks about the design of the site.

However, a link from SitePoint is certainly more valuable.

if you are getting image links, you are actually not getting the total link value.

BTW, solve the canonical issue in URL. :)

We use site wide links on our site; we have website design by something designed on our sites but we post it as an image. But it’s good to know that it’s considered spam. Good article.
