You have to participate in the community. Seek out the people in the community who are talking about your niche and enter the discussion. Then you might even get some quality traffic to your site. Sure there are ways to game the system and get quick hits of traffic, but it won't last and the traffic will be garbage anyway. Not only will it increase the fun of social networking, but good friends will be more likely to vote on your stories too. On the flip side, I think a lot of Internet Marketers view social media solely in the terms of backlinks, SEO value, etc... As a result, a lot of submissions to the social media are becoming spammy.
