Using Wikipedia for Your Business

Posted on May 21, 2008 by Adie Online Branding 1 Comment

When you type a certain term in Google, chances are the result will show a Wikipedia page somewhere at the top of the search results. Have you ever considered using this online encyclopedia as a tool to drive traffic to your website? If so, then you are among the large number of marketers who want to get traffic from Wikipedia to their websites.

You should realize though that Wikipedia was flooded with poor quality links in the past so they cleverly utilized the NOFOLLOW tag on all their external links. But if you cannot benefit from placing links on Wikipedia, what is the purpose of posting there anyway? Well, you will benefit from having an improved reputation, for example. And this should be your goal when you decide to contribute to the Wikipedia community.

Becoming a Volunteer

Wikipedia can be editors in Wikipedia. Editing can add to your reputation especially if you edit content that adds value to the site. Quality edits should not be self-serving; rather, it should be unbiased and add to the knowledge of the community. If you want to learn the Wikipedia system works, you can start out by becoming a member of the community. Build your own user page and interact with other members through the Talk function. This will enable you to improve your reputation and you will discover how you can effectively make use of Wikipedia for your business.

Include your Name in Wikipedia

Some people may view this as overkill but you can do it. However, you need to make sure that you are someone worth mentioning. For example, being a CEO of your own company is not enough; there should be well-known institutions, experts, and accomplishments behind you. If you have published a book or if you were quoted by known experts in the industry, you can include this as part of the reference materials.

Take note though that you should pass Wikipedia’s “notability test” to be included in its entries. These small efforts can go a long way in establishing your site’s positive reputation. Traffic will inevitably increase if you are proven to be knowledgeable in your field.

Did this also. I know a couple links were removed before though. Not sure if any still remain. Brought great traffic in the beginning.
