Whenever I talk to people trying to reach certain goals, this excuse often seems to come up: “I can’t reach my goals because I don’t have the motivation. Some days I’m motivated and I get a lot done. But other days I feel lazy and I get nothing done.” Can you relate to this? I certainly can.
How can you stay motivated in reaching your goals especially in online business - where there seems to be many things to do and not enough time to do them?
I think the secret to getting motivated is doing the hard work of getting started. I’ve found if I wait for motivation to strike me like lightning I won’t get much done. However, if I just get moving and doing something to move me forward to reaching my goals, I’ll begin to get motivated.
Sometimes when I’m feeling lazy, I make myself do something productive. Afterwards, I feel better about myself. I don’t feel lazy anymore. Not only that, but I feel productive because of what I just accomplished. This oftentimes leads to more productive work.
Have you noticed this? Let’s say you’re a blogger and your goal is to post something today. You have a vague idea of the post you want to write, but you’re feeling lazy and don’t really want to do it. It’s just one of those days. You’re not motivated. What should you do?
You should force yourself to sit down in front of the computer and start typing. Yes, it won’t feel too good for the first couple of minutes. But as you type, you’ll gain some motivation to type more. In fact, the more words you write, the more you’ll be motivated to finish your post. Pretty soon, you’ll finish your post. You’ll feel productive. You’ll feel good about yourself. And you’ll probably have the motivation to write another post.
You’re in the zone. You’re in that creative workflow where you’re actually getting things done and being productive instead of just being lazy and distracted.
Action leads to motivation. And motivation leads to more action. Momentum = motivation. So, the most important thing is to get started.
Just do it.

This is very true. I think procrastination is one of the biggest enemies to succeeding in business and generally in life. I wrote about this specifically in reference to freelancers and other self-employed people just in discussing how to keep yourself moving and productive.
The Freelancer’s Biggest Enemies - Procrastination
As you stated, the best thing to do is “Just Do It!”
As someone who’s done freelancing, I totally understand what you’re saying. Procrastination is definitely a huge enemy against freelancing success.
I’m learning that one the hard way, amen!!
Thanks for the motivation
My problem is that there just isnt enough time in the day. I constantly want to work on my projects. Its almost like a craving of anticipation. Motivation is rarely a problem withme. Im not at the point yet where i can survive without working a real job plus i go to school full time. There just isnt enough time in the day
With blogging is easy if you get used to use the wordpress timestamp, you can prewrite several articles and set the date when you want those posts to go live. Like this I usually cover myself for 2-3 days.
But it has a negative effect :P it keeps you away of blogging and you lose that automated feel to blog about something. Unless while you work or watch tv a new topic comes in mind and you sit in front of the computer and write about that and postpone it too ;)
Yeah, that wordpress timestamp is a lifesaver :)
yupp I know what you mean. Im not really a blogger, just on my Guitar Hero Site. All my other sites are niche sites. This is the blog that actually got me into building niche sites. I just always cant wait to work on it and see my sites improve. Right now im just workin on link building.
Good luck!
Having a patient attitude helps me from being too frustrated whenever I work on the web.
You say, the most important thing is to get started. But it is not a problem for me. I have many ideas, and usually it isn’t very hard for me to start. But my problem is lack of persistence. When I face some obstacles, I tend to give up everything and start something new. And I can do nothing about it!
Persistence is simply getting started multiple times until the project is finished :)
[…] The Secret to Getting MotivatedFeeling lazy? Use these tips to jumpstart your work. A lull that goes on too long is the death of many homepreneurs. A formerly self-employed friend of mine (hi Justin) just got a job (congrats!) because he needed someone else to kick him in the pants to get going (ouch). […]
Well..
This problem of laziness has haunted me since ages.. I was a lazy guy since the past 2 years.. But then I got a Job.. I tried being lazy there I got kicked off :) .. Then I realized there is nothing called as motivation to work.. You just start working.. Yesterday I was talking with a client of mine franchise opportunities . They Sell your business for FREE with NO listing fees and ZERO commissions. He is a good and old friend of mine.. He yesterday asked me Ash You dont look lazy or tired.. ( He has been a friend of mine since 10 Years).. he noticed a change in me.. I couldn’t notice anything as that time I had taken of my interest in noticing such small things.. I proffered to work.. I came home and realized the importance of his words.. In this world if you wish to survive Just work hard.. Dont wait for Santa clause to come and give u motivation.. Find it in yourself :)
Being a procrastinator is for me an everyday thing…its easy is why. The hard part about motivation in taking that first step to doing something worth while. For me the motivation comes as I realize what my new business will do for others rather than just make money. I found that if I do things that make others peoples lives better than regardless of the money I make, I’m leaving a legacy of some sort. That is what motivates me.
