The Number #1 All-Time Blogging Tip From A Problogger

Posted on August 25, 2007 by Adie Blogging 10 Comments

give before you getI haven’t been blogging very long, so I’m not qualified to give the number #1 all-time blogging tip. However, Chris Garrett, who makes his living as a professional blogger, recently gave his most important blogging tip on the Blog Herald.

Give before you get.

Simple but highly useful and effective. I took his tip and evaluated my blogging to see if I was giving before getting.

Content: I link out frequently to other bloggers. However, I try not to just link out but also add my thoughts to the blogger’s post. I’ve linked out to people who have left insightful questions in the comments section. Also, I’ve given out links to bloggers who wrote useful content by answering a forum question in their niche.

Marketing:
Some of you are really good at blog commenting. I think I’ve seen Glen Allsopp, one of my regular readers, comment on virtually every internet marketing blog I’ve visited this week. However, I’ve decided to go a different route with my marketing. With my busy freelance work, I only have time for one method of marketing. I’m focusing on social media sites. I’ve been participating on StumbleUpon and Netscape by making friends, submitting stories, and commenting on other people’s submissions.

What about you? How are you giving before getting?

It’s because I don’t have work to do. Well I do but that is my work. As of next month I’m leaving my family and going to live in Africa so getting my knowledge cram packed and my sites noticed before I don’t have a chance to do anything. As of next month I won’t be commenting on any blogs for at least 3 months.

I see. Good plan. With your numerous comments, I don’t think we’ll forget you in 3 months :)

Thanks for an excellent post. It actually reminded me of another, less detailed post,on the same vein:

    http://everypennyhelps.blogspot.com/2007/07/ideas-for-making-money-give-something.html

Well, I give away links, specifically three links on my website to anyone who talks about making money. I don’t necessarily ask for reciprocals, that’s not entirely unselfish since I am getting something in return, the presence of these blogs and websites is what males my blog possible! But that was the whole intent with Money Maker Blogs, it was to give away links. Granted the blog is still new and no rank, but my stats show that the blogs and websites listed there are getting some decent traffic and feed subscriptions directly from my blog.

Apart from that, I try to comment frequently on the blogs that I have listed on Money Maker Blogs, and on other blogs on topics that I enjoy. As I continue to learn more I plan to give more away :).

Your website is a good example of giving before getting. Just make sure all the sites you link to are quality sites or else you’ll be giving low quality info.

Thanks for the suggestion, it’s definitely very valid. I have been trying to sift through them and watch the sites that are submitted for content and updates. Since I am not demanding reciprocals I am under no obligation to keep websites listed. I am depending on user rankings to determine what stays and what doesn’t. But it’s still early days so I’m giving everyone a chance.

    Thanks again!

For me, this ranks #2 to when Brian Clark shared his secret to Copyblogger’s success.

He said the most important thing is what others say about you. I think these two tidbits work with each other nicely to setting you off on your path to success.
