Targeting domains for different geo locations

We often come across different websites that offer services in different countries or geographic regions. There is no doubt that most of them are really big businesses and offer different products to different regions.

In most of the cases, they use a single domain name with different country specific folders like domain-name.com/uk/index.html. Or in some cases people use uk.domain-name.com/index.html to target different geographical locations. And in some cases, the company uses separate domain names or TLDs to target different regions.

This is not just about big companies. We often come across many web based companies who want to cater to different geographical locations. And as web based companies do not always require physical offshore presence, they can easily go for geo targeting.

If you are a small business owner and want to offer web solutions for different countries or different language groups, here are some of my tips:

1. Focus on a single domain name rather than going in for country specific TLDs. This will help you to concentrate all your marketing strategies and results at a single point for better ROI.

2. Are you worried about the Duplicate content issue? I would say that, same content in different languages normally does not get you into duplicate content issues. If you do not want to take any risk with your main domain, use canonical tags. It is now supported by most of the search engines.

3. As far as URL construction is concerned, I would suggest you to go for uk.domain-name.com/index.html.
