Something about Google Chrome Comic Book

Posted on September 4, 2008 by Roy General 1 Comment

Ok, here is one more post on Google Chrome, but for a different reason.I have never seen Google publishing a comic strip to promote a product - and that too for something as serious as the Google Browser. There had been lots of buzz in the market about the Google Browser for last couple of years. You can read the story titled “Inside Chrome: The Secret Project to Crush IE and Remake the Web” at Wired (a bit long but nice reading) to know how much it meant to entire Google organization. But why did Google publish such a comic strip to introduce the browser? Did you find any fun element associated with the browser? Does it appeal to any definite target audience who may like the comic strip? And more importantly, does it go well with Google’s image? And as far as presentation is concerned, does it really look like an online comic strip? It looks clunky. What is wrong with Google or Scott McCloud (the comic book designer)?Ok, here are some answers:The comic book was not designed for this purpose - it was designed to be printed and distributed among bloggers and reporters for a better understanding of the browser. So Scott had nothing to do as far as online presentation was concerned. But why Google? Do you really think Google’s traditional presentation of “help resources” were not enough to communicate the content in a better way? Does it have anything to do with Microsoft’s “Mommy, Why is There a Server in the House“?Anyways, I think this comic strip will soon be replaced by plain and simple text along with links to more related questions. Lol.However, at this point I would like to point out one thing:Story sells - story engages the reader with the content faster than you could even think. It is not necessary to print comic books to tell a story or to engage readers. If you can tell a credible story in the post or content you are writing, there are high chances that it would work better than a factsheet. But, like I say always - do not overdo it.
