These are quality sites with good content. So, why did they lose up to 3 PR points? I don’t know. There is a lot of speculation but one thing is sure, you can’t depend on Google. They can randomly wreck your PR.
So, stop focusing on PR. It’s not in your control. Instead, focus on getting more money from each visitor by selling some of your content and also learn to promote your site without relying on Google.

Add your commentDee,
I have never claimed to sell PR when I took on some opportunities and sold few text link ads on my blog. In fact made only about $500 before canceling my accounts with TLA, ReviewMe and others.
I agree that one should top worrying about PR and as some one on commenting on Problogger said, RSS subscriptions is a a new PR- but I also would add that RSS subscriptions is the biggest Google’s threat. Just my two cents.
Thanks for the link!

I didn’t mean to imply that the blogs on the post were actually selling PageRank. I wanted to show that selling PageRank was risky because even quality sites like your own were getting penalized. Hope that clears things up.
Also, I agree with RSS subscriptions being a lot more important now. And they are a great buffer against Google’s seemingly random penalties. Thanks for the reminder.

I am a little bit curious as to why Google even makes PR publicly viewable.

After these PR drops, I’ve stopped trying to figure out Google. With many internet companies being pretty transparent, it’s amazing what Google does without explaining itself.

I think that the answer of that question is right in front of our eyes i.e. the title of the post. Selling PR or tricking the system to gain more backlinks by running contests.

Yeah – I agree. People need to stop focusing on PR. Google should just scrap the whole visible PR thing and stop providing a currency for link sellers. Problem solved.
