Million Dollar Homepage + Wikipedia = Million Dollar Wiki

million dollar wiki

I just read an interesting post from John Chow about The Million Dollar Wiki. What’s this wiki all about? Basically, it’s Million Dollar Homepage meets Wikipedia.

Graham Langdon, the creator, is selling wiki pages for $100 each. The $100 is a one time payment to own a page for at least 15 years. He hopes to sell 10,000 pages, which would earn him a million dollars.

His wiki is starting to grow virally. Check out his traffic. I think John Chow’s post helped a lot. When John Chow blogged about him, he had sold less than 160 pages. Two days after John’s post, he sold 70 pages.

Will It Be Successful?

I think Graham’s wiki will be successful. Here are 7 reasons why.

1. If 10,000 pages are sold, Graham is allowing the page owners the right to resell their pages. I think many people will buy a page out of speculation that it will be worth something in the future.

2. There’s a sense of urgency to buy a page with a relevant keyword before anyone else. Unlike the pixels of The Million Dollar Home Page, page URLs are distinct. This is similar to buying a premium domain name like business.com or cars.com.

3. The pages are flexible. You can add images, video, RSS feeds, and flash. You can even monetize them with Google AdSense and relevant ads.

4. Graham has good content guidelines. He doesn’t allow irrelevant content, porn, offensive content, and keyword spam.

5. $100 is not too expensive for many people. When you think about it, $100 for 15 years is under $7 a year.

6. Graham has done some marketing by sending out press releases. He plans to release a marketing video on YouTube and other online video sites.

7. John Chow vouched for him. That has to be good for something.

What do you think of The Million Dollar Wiki? Do you think it will earn a million dollars?

I was thinking your site has been hacked Dee. Also, this domain was redirected to jeet.com, dunno how.

He is in need of selling 10,000 articles, nothing to sneeze at…

I think this will be a fad… although the creator will make a lot of money from it.

I think it’s a brilliant idea, one of those that makes you ask yourself “why the hell didn’t I think of that”?

Looks interesting. By the way I love the new design - so much cleaner looking and it runs so much faster.

Glad you are back - I too, was worried the blog was hacked.

I think it’s a brilliant idea because there are so many naive Web users who will pay for a page on this site.

I think people see the word “wiki”, recognize that Wikipedia is at the top of Google search results for countless searches, incorrectly assume that wiki = Wikipedia, and therefore assume their $100 page will be at the top of the search results.

Contrary to this belief, the site has few inbound links, zero PageRank, and countless other factors that will result in this being the same as throwing $100 away.

Did you know that for less than $100 you can buy a domain name and hosted website with as many pages as I want? Apparently none of the buyers do! Why not do that? While you’re at it, you can control the on-site SEO instead of simply hoping that this lone page hosted on a third party site hits the top of targeted search results.

Glad to see you back, though the white open space makes the blog too spaced out. Just my opinion though. Try #f7f7f7 for the background, the little tinge makes quite a difference.

About the wiki, yeah it’ll be a fad for sometime, till the next guy/girl comes along. Can’t wait to see the copycat sites pop up around this one.

The site has not been Hacked, we are having major issues moving to our new faster dedicated server.

I am sorry for the inconvenience, all will be resumed soon.

    Thank you.

    No way!

    1. there’s no good reason to buy a page;
    2. the domain name absolutely sucks!
    3. the page design is awful.

But I’m sure the guy will have money for his brand new car, what’s not bad at all…

@Ali - There’s already copycat sites. However, Graham has the first-to-market advantage. The John Chow recommendation helps, too :)

@Matt - Good point about naive web users connecting wiki with great wikipedia rankings. Much of marketing is all about perception.

@Paul - Which page did you buy?

    @Someones-Ex-Gf - Huh? Ex-Girlfriend hasn’t been taken yet.

Maybe they will make a million in seven years? But then again its about $150,000 a year.

It will all depend on how they market the site. John Chow? I think they could have done better.

I thought he would make a million, but now I’m not so sure. He’s sold less than 300 so far. He really needs to do more marketing to get his site to go viral.

He just started an affiliate program, but you have to contact him to arrange the details.

He’s definitely going all out to publicise his site. I was approached to do a review for him as well.

I will just give his site a buzz ;)

Not a review because i think there are so many reviews out there. Nothing much to add to it already :)

It’s hard to say whether he will make it or not. Part of me thinks “Who would be silly enough to buy a page?” but the other part of me says that he should go for it, because really, what significant risk is in it for him?

I don’t think I will buy a page for 5 entries in the contest, I might just go for the 2 option.

I’ve just purchased Singles at MDW. It’s okay with me to spend $100 and see if it developes into something. At very least, I’ll get my $100 back no problem - I already have an offer to put some links into my page, and AdSense already brings some money.

I missed the bandwagon back in 1994 whem that guy snapped sex.com and match.com - and today I’m willing to try similar opportunity out, I’m not goign to loose any money anyway.

I bought a Million Dollar Wiki page. I actually own the Marketing Page and so far, I’ve already made my $100 back. It’s pretty neat, there is full support for every issue you could possibly have and, well I’m not the only one who has made my $100 back. In fact, I now have a coupon code so people can get $5 off of their page purchases. The code is: k5webworks, If you want to buy a page, just punch this code in on the checkout page and you just saved 5 bucks. Anyway, I belive MDW has now reached over 380 pages sold. Graham is a pretty smart guy in my book.

Good job. I like how you’re “meta-marketing” to make money from the wiki.
