Marketing Your Blog in a Saturated Niche

This is a guest post from a relatively new make money online blogger, David Peralty. Check out his blog at xfep.com. I especially like the new podcast he started last month.

I want to start by saying that the reason a niche is saturated is usually because at one point or another it was a very popular way to make money online, or at least brought in a great deal of traffic. I am sure Darren Rowse thinks about his first time mentioning which blogs he made the most money on and dreads having mentioned it, as overnight a dozen blogs were created in the same niche and began competing with him.

So many bloggers though try to copy what bloggers are currently doing, and fail to realize that it took many steps to get the blogs to their current status, and without going through those steps, your blog probably won’t do very well.

Identify Your Competition

The first thing that I recommend bloggers do, no matter the niche they select is to locate all your competitors. They can be your largest sources for traffic as well as show you what you are up against.

One of the ways you can find out who your competitors are is through a Technorati search, or through search engine keyword searches.

Assess Their Weaknesses

Every site has its weakness and the trick to getting yourself a step ahead of your competition is to find where your competitors lack and fix that hole on your own blog.

You also will want to look at what makes each of your competitors do so well. Is it a professional design? Is it their long, detailed posts?

Promote Through Social Media

There are so many social media websites now, with sites in pretty much every niche and even if you write the best content in the world, it won’t matter until you can get people to read it. Promote your pillar articles as best you can, as often as you can. Early on in my sites, I received upwards of ninety percent of my traffic through social media sites like StumbleUpon, Reddit, and Sphinn.

Guest Posts

One thing many of your competitors aren’t doing is spending their free time on other blogs creating amazing content, and thusly promoting their own blog. This is something you can do, and it works rather effectively. You expose a large group of people to your writing style, and even better, your blog URL. It can be difficult, stressful, but the rewards can be quite numerous and you can really start to set yourself apart from your competition.

Network (Make Friends)

I would not have been able to even get my full time problogging job if it wasn’t for networking. Connecting with other people in the same niche, or different ones, can open up all types of opportunities. I have been able to learn new ways to promote my site, gain access to some private blog related communities and mailing lists, and all of these things have made my sites much more successful.

The easiest way to make friends is to comment on their blog, mention the great things others are doing in your blog, and contact them via their contact form if they seem like the type where that would be appropriate.

More About the Guest Blogger

David recently decided to break into the make money online niche, which is well known as one of the most competitive, and oversaturated blog niches in existence. His blog, eXtra for Every Publisher, continues to do very well.

Promotion through social media is key right now. I get most of my traffic through different social media sites. It definitely helps. With so many outlets, it would be wrong not to take advantage of them.

Social media is definitely the way to go. It’s growing quickly and humans are social creatures so social media will never go away.

I think the point about becoming a guest blogger is KEY (especially for us new bloggers). In the beginning, it is important to give give give and get your writing style/advise “out there”. I have done several guest posts and even though I feel like I am giving away some of my best stuff…it has been very useful to make a name for myself!

Learn from the best and you will become the best.

I’m just checking what is wrong with NBB, but I can’t find anything. Maybe there is not enough images…
