Main service versus add on services

A few days back I wrote a post on “How to know what your visitors are looking for“. If you remember, the answer was simple – just ask them (Really! Read the post to understand the complication). In this post I would focus upon another important issue: value added services and the main service.

There are a lot of web hosting companies that simply offer web hosting services. Some of them are really good in their business but you will find a lot of them who are primarily resellers. At the same time, there are some web hosting companies who also offer domain name. Both of them are related or complimentary services but at the same time they are different solutions. Now, my question is: will you consider domain name registration to be a value added service? Or would you like to consider them as parallel business wings? Do you think that you could do well without domain names!

Why I am asking these questions?

When you start a business from scratch, you can not always offer all the services. You normally add one service after another. (And I believe this is a healthy process to grow – especially for the small business owners.) Now, in the process a lot of business owners with limited resources lose their focus. In the process of developing secondary products, they forget their main product.

A lot of people say that if they do not offer certain add on or value added services, they may lose clients. In some cases it is true. People often want complete solution under a single roof.

But will you allow this at the cost of your main product? What does the client want – just maximum services or enough services and better quality?

What do you think?
