How NOT to Use Social Bookmarking

Posted on February 7, 2007 by Adie SEO 13 Comments

I just read a great post by Muhammad Saleem over at Pronet Advertising arguing his thoughts on why so many social networking users (Digg in particular) mark every link or post related to SEO as spam. Although I don’t think it’s quite so cut-and-dry as he makes it out to be, there are definately some good points made.

He uses this video to sum up his argument:

This is a prime example of the mindset of many many SEO “experts” in the industry. Not only is “Gary Ruplinger” (the guy in the video - yea I went to his site, shut up) full of ill-conceived advice that will almost certainly get your account(s), website(s), and IP banned from social bookmarking sites, they’re not even good! If you want to take full advantage of the wonders of social bookmarking, write good posts that people want to read and share. Little “SEO tricks” such as the ones mentioned in this video are worthless and will do nothing more than embarrass you in the community.

People who view Digg and other social bookmarking sites as “tools” to be used for promotion and SEO fail more often than not.

Muhammad sums it up:

Like I mentioned before, the Digg community doesn’t have an irrational vendetta against SEO-related sites, it’s just that people like the gentleman in the video above, cause the community to generalize about SEOs and thus label all of them has having the same mentality and using the same tactics.

That guy is a creepy little bastard. If I ever saw him in the street, I would have a hard time not punching him in the face. He bounces around and moves his eyebrows like a crack addict. It is people like this moron why Digg hates SEO’s.

That video was horrible. I couldn’t stand listening to his squeeky voice and nervous body movements. Nothing beats good, quality content - you’re right.

Just one thing I want to clear up. The service in that video does not spam digg. We don’t submit to digg. As I’m sure you’re well aware, the benefit from getting featured on digg is that people will blog your story if its interesting. That can’t be faked so we don’t even bother. The service does submit to sites like del.icio.us whose purpose, last I checked, was to have a whole bunch of links to peoples sites. That’s all I wanted to say. Carry on with your regularily schedule bashing.

Okay, Gary, fair enough. Digg spam aside, you still promote setting up fake accounts and even using automated software to spam social bookmarking sites. Regardless if you use Digg or not, that’s STILL BAD SEO.

Google and the brains behind it have said all along and practice what they preach that the key to getting very high placement is Content, Content, Content, that is very focused and relevant to the key search phrases Google matches with the content. Too many people try to play games with Google, and in the end it does not work. I did slug through the full video, and feel that this scheme might have some quick affect on Google placement, but will eventually be discovered and written out. I believe the real question is, will Yahoo ever get its search engine decision process together? Or has Google done such a better job that it no longer matters what Yahoo does?

Gary Ruplinger is your typical con man on the internet. I suggest never using his advice or buying anything from his sites. I ordered some eyeglasses from his fake - matrixeye website and never received anything - I was conned out of $45.92 from a paypal account - paypal refused to do anything initially as said it was too early when i ordered in march 07 and complained in early april and did not receive by end of may - I put in a claim in may and paypal said it was past the deadline of 45 days - This creepo is a typical crook that preys off the internet - I would gladly consider whipping his ass if I ever got a chance to meet him for all the people he has conned including myself.
