Now here is a post worth mentioning at NBB to support another post from NBB - See how you can become a successful local journalist and a local HERO.
In that post I was discussing some important aspects to start a local blog.
Some highlights from that post (for those who missed that post):
- Hook your local audience when the mainstream media was busy with national news.
- No scarcity of space in your blog to cover any and all stories.
- Your niche is too small and more targeted - it is always tough to satisfy 1000 people than 10. Mainstream media can never satisfy 1000 people with a single story but you can easily achieve a better satisfaction percentage in your niche.
- You set your own rules - you can change your views as you grow with the situation.
Now take a look at some interesting points from the other post [The Problem with Small-Scale Blog Consolidation]:
“The reality is that small and medium blogs that have real value, great content, solid writers and an engaged community will always, always, always make more money from sponsorships than CPM-based ads.”
(If you want to know the background of this comment, please read that post and come back or you can read that post anytime you want; so let’s continue)
And as he perfectly puts it, as a solo blogger you cannot run to Microsoft or Disney for direct advertisement to make the most out of your blog and to keep it clean.
Now if you concentrate on your local niche and can engage local audience with the blog, you won’t need to fly all the way to Microsoft (or any other big company who would be interested in your reader base) to get direct advertisements or sponsorships.
Your sponsors are everywhere in your own town. Talk to any direct business organization and inform them why they should advertise in your blog. You can even sell their products via your blog (arrange for some special discounts, coupons etc.). You can even turn it into a big platform to review any local business (you can get some real money from there rather than writing paid review via review me for $10).
Just walk down the street and talk to prospective advertisers. You have all the reasons why they should advertise in your blog.
However, I would like say one thing again: before going all out for advertisements, create a loyal readership for your blog.
