I’m not sure if you know, but I really love forums - The Internet Has “Officially” Gone MAD! Safe to say Forums don’t make Money!

I was recently contacted by Nicu Zara of VumPost pimping his software that captures (scrapes, cough, cough) results from Yahoo Answers.

“I developed a software that captures questions and answers on “Yahoo
Answers” and then turns them into topics and posts for your forum.”

This information can be used by:
- forum owners: to boost forum posts and make users interact more
- writers: to discover hot topics to write about without having to do a lot of
research
- developers: market research

As luck would have it, I have an empty forum that I have never ever marketed (lazy). In the following video I show the software in action.

Here is my forum after I used the software AuctionForum

I’m really in two minds about this type of software and to be perfectly honest it’s a 100% unethical way to build a forum. I’m sure however, lots of lazy forum owners will queue up to buy it!

Do you feel the same way, would you use this software or do you think it is very unethical?

I messed up my first comment - my apologies (feel free to delete it).

I wrote about this software on my community building blog in an article entitled ‘Give me 5 minutes and I’ll show you innovation‘.

I too, am still in two minds about this. In my article I wrote that I can understand it being used to supplement the content of a community, but it should never be used as a substitute for original content.

At the end of the day, by using software like this you are merely replicating content that already exists - therefore your online community is offering nothing different. If your community offers nothing different, why should people visit your site?

For a community to be successful it needs unique, original content and unique, original (and real!) members. This software doesn’t address these issues.

I really don’t like it. If I were to use content already produced in other forums I would rather find the posts that I found relevant and rewrite it and post it in my own forum. That way I would provide valuable unique content that was only slightly borrowed :)
